Sis and I are travelling to Miri today in preparation for Mark and Michelle's traditional Chinese wedding. My sister booked the cheapest flights she could get and we ended up on Air Asia with a transit in Kuala Lumpur. The first flight was alright as it took about an hour, but the walk from the plane to immigration nearly had me considering using a trolley (which could not be found!) as a skateboard. I think I probably walked off the prata meal I had onboard.
The second flight from KL to Miri took about 3 hours, and I think that is my limit for budget flights with only a meal to keep me entertained. Luckily, the Miri airport was much smaller, cooler, and faster to navigate through. We were out quite fast but the heat was not very welcoming after 4 hours of air-conditioned comfort.
We got in a cab and head to our hotel to check in and refresh ourselves before meeting up with one of the designated drivers who brought us to the home for a meet up with the rest before bring us to a seafood restaurant for dinner.
However, before we could even tuck in to anything, Michelle called Chris (her brother) to give him an earful about messing with her plans, and demanded that we were brought back t o the house to meet up with the rest of the bridesmaids. One poor driver had to miss some of the food and drive us (really quickly) back to the huge house where we find a rather teary-eyed Michelle being consoled by the other bridesmaids. Apparently, someone was trying to pull a prank but Michelle wasn't impressed, but once we were there, she instantly turned into her old crazy, chatty self.
The house was huge and preparations for the wedding was everywhere. Folded joss paper and other items for prayers, rolls of fire crackers, and food for tomorrow was all prepared and tucked into corners while they left the furniture out to host visitors. It was a really peaceful (except for the crazy cockerel with the hoarse throat) to just chill out in their alfresco area, which was what my sis did with the other girls as we waited for one more bridesmaid who was coming over after work. I was more interested in what was being prepared in the really busy kitchen, and it was definitely a feast that we got.
The last bridesmaid arrives and we all tuck into the wonderful dishes prepared by Michelle's mom, aunts and maids. There was prawns, kuehs, chicken and vegetables dishes we could identify, as well as some really foreign dishes sis and I have never tried seen before. One of the dishes was a very alcoholic chicken and herb dish which was supposedly good to cleanse the womb, therefore given to a bride before her wedding night (aka Michelle), or for mothers who just gave birth. Another dish was a plate of meat that was really dark, and it tasted like duck. Nobody actually told us what it was, and the other girls giggled as we ate it. Well it tasted good and I ate more without any care to the weird giggling and side glances.
After the wonderful meal, it was time to plot the obstacles Mark had to complete before he is considered worthy of getting Michelle as his bride.
